Title:
Wording:
The task is to find and visit an industry in your area that either already makes products that can be used to improve the lives of The Poor or could be transformed into producing such products, and to discuss what it would take to make such a change.
Time:
hours
Introduction:
See also the introduction to the previous task 9.

It is truly amazing how simple technologies can make a huge difference. Just
imagine how a small solar panel can provide electricity to even the most remote
area, or a wind-up radio makes it possible to broadcast educational programs to
areas with no electricity.

A lot of technologies are developed in the rich part of the world. Universities have
research departments for both basic and specific research, which usually takes place
in cooperation between the universities and the business world.

Space research develops many new technologies, and even though they are
developed for travel in space, there are often ways these technologies can improve
our lives in surprising ways.

Some research is done by governments, but the major part is done by private
corporations, and is research specifically targeting a request. Since the corporate
world is in it for the profit, the requests are not taking their point of departure in the
needs of people unless it is raising profits and competitiveness.

For example, research into how to make sure a light bulb needs to be changed every
6 months. Or conserving food that gives it a shelve life of 300 days, but tampers
with our health.

Competition drives research in new technologies at a speed never seen before in
history. Just think of mobile phones and computers and how new features are
constantly added so you need to buy a new model every other year.

But there are also many examples of groundbreaking research into ways to improve
life for mankind. For example the Canadian architect William McDonough and the
German chemist Michael Braungart, who together developed the concept “Cradle to
Cradle”. This is a design that has as its starting point that products should be
designed for a new birth – and not for “the grave”. ( www.mcdonough.com ). It is
about creating closed loops and maximizing the value of materials without
damaging the ecosystem. Economy, equity, and ecology have equal weight.

In this task you will look into existing technologies and research into new
technologies and extract examples of technologies that can improve the life of The
Poor.
Directive:
1. Determine the industry you want to visit, make the arrangements and set up your
questions.

2. Carry out the visit, get answers to your questions, and discuss with them what it
would take to transform the industry so that it could have an impact on
improving lives of The Poor.

3. Write a report on the visit and your conclusions on the usefulness of the products
produced, and the possibility of transforming existing industrial production into
more useful products.
