The workshop uses spectrum of discussion to help participants to discuss different provoking statements hiding misconceptions against the Poor from the Global South, to introduce the concept of derationalisation and to re-evaluate students’ own views upon poverty, all in order to prepare for meeting the Poor.

Introduction:
In this workshop, we want to prepare participants for meeting the Poor, although it
should also spark reflections about meeting the ‘Other’ of any type.

At DNS, we travel to learn. We meet various people to recognise many different
perspectives and therefore have a better understanding about the world at large. But, it
is not enough. We are all biased because of our background: social, economic, cultural.
Whether we like it or not, our perception of reality is distorted by many misconceptions
present in our environment.

With this workshop, we intend to smash all what we know about other people into
pieces. We want it to be provoking, uncomfortable and moralising. We don’t want to
tell you the truth about all possible groups of people but rather to help you in finding it
out in any situation – or to be more precise – help you not to fall for easy conclusions,
prejudices and misconceptions on your way.

There are four important aspects of fighting prejudice that will be tackled here:

-an open mind,
-right questions,
-theoretical knowledge,
-and, what might surprise many, self-awareness.

An open mind will be useful in accepting that what we think we know, even our core
concepts about the reality, might turn out to be uncomfortably false. It will also help in
listening to the teammates and anybody we meet and recognise our lack of knowledge.
Knowing right questions will enhance our ability to search deeper and not to jump into
conclusions based on a superficial perception of reality. It will keep our observations in
check. It will help us to put ourselves in other person’s shoes.

Theoretical knowledge is power. We cannot discover everything by ourselves, we need
to use other people’s work. Researchers over years collect, analyse and publish all kind
of data which can support us in all kind of situations. They are not without flows, we
know that at DNS and do our best to keep both in check by combining theory and
practice which are inseparable.

When we meet people, we cannot help but make judgements. In this unavoidable
process, we might tend to see ourselves as more rational, morally better or superior
than other people. Being aware of why we do what we do, think what we think, maybe
why don’t appreciate what we have will be crucial to understand the ‘Other’. There is
no reason why the Poor should be denied wanting the same things than those in a
better material situation just because they lack nutrition or education.

If we are able to have an open mind, ask right questions, know some data and be aware
about ourselves, we will be more successful in avoiding derationalisation of other
people’s actions.

Derationalisation is usually an effect of lack of knowledge about the ‘Other’, which we
replace by imagining stupid reasons behind his or her actions. Derationalisation comes
from not being able to put ourselves in other person’s shoes and thinking we would do
better. If I were ‘them’, I would spend my money on garden farming rather than a
smartphone. Well, how many of us who are part of this workshop do garden farming
and don’t have a smartphone? Why wouldn’t ‘they’?
Directive:
1. Improve the level of the discussion about the Poor.

2. Share data within the subject.

3. Fight misconceptions.

4. Introduce a term of derationalisation.

5. Make students understand that the Poor have the same needs and wants like
everybody else.

6. Define the Poor.
