Title:
Wording:
The task is to identify a relevant theme to prepare and present to a public of teachers, students and people from the communities.
Time:
hours
Introduction:
We often feel the importance of presenting a particular theme to other
people; because we believe that by doing this we will motivate them to fight
for their development. To determine what these themes are, we do not need
to carry out an investigation; our own lives tell us what is important.

After all, when you are walking along, you meet many different people.
What do you think about them? I am sure that you would like to see the
lives of these people improving day after day. You would like to see them
happy and successful. This is simply an altruistic desire, because you are not
God and cannot make this a reality. They have to fight for this themselves,
you can only motivate them to fight and sometimes join them and fight
alongside them. So, whatever you decide to present to the public should be
important to you and to the public as well.

But this is just a question of deciding what you are going to present. There is
another challenge that is no less great; how are you going to present the
theme to the public in order to capture their attention and pass on the
message with no difficulty in understanding? This is where the challenge for
the period “Bringing it to the Public” begins. How can we give a
presentation of relevant themes to the public? How can we hit the hearts?

This task demands all of your attention so that you become aware of this and
create ways of presenting relevant themes to the public. You already know
of the many options available to you: talks, exhibitions, theatre, posters,
pamphlets, songs, poems, stories, bulletins and shows. So it is up to you to
choose one, two, three or more ways and provide a rich, useful presentation.

Let’s look at an example: Imagine that you were going through a rural area
and you came across a village where all families had their own latrines. You
talked to the men and women and they explained how they were able to
mobilize all the families to build latrines: perhaps they told you that before a
house can be built, the latrine has to be built first.

Perhaps you want to tell this story to the public. How will you do it? It could
be through an exhibition and talk, followed by a piece of theatre prepared by
some of your fellow students, which recounts the situation that you saw.

This rich form of presentation shows that you are serious about what you are
saying. Your presentation must not be seen as simply getting a school
exercise done. This is serious work; prepare it and do it in a professional
way so that everyone feels like they are involved in a serious subject that
could help them take important decisions connected to their wellbeing.

So, with this task, you have the chance to think about and decide on the best
ways of presenting your relevant themes. Think for yourself about what
presentations you have enjoyed watching. Then organise a presentation that
will make people sit up and pay attention, with good results.

Some misguided people think that the presentation should be comedic and
make people laugh. This is not the case. You can mix the useful and the fun,
of course, with a little bit of humour, but it is important that everything
contributes to making an interesting presentation with a clear, easy-to-
understand message.

Think of the many ways you can do this!
Get to work!
Good luck!
Directive:
1. Personally think about three themes that you feel are important to bring
to the public from what you have seen, heard and experienced on your
travels through Africa.

2. Invite your teacher and explain to him why these themes are important
and your ideas for how to present them. Use your teacher’s comments to
choose the final theme to present.

3. Choose one of the themes and write a page about its content and an
explanation of why it is a relevant theme to take to the public.

4. Prepare the public presentation of the theme, explaining how you will
present it.

5. Prepare everything necessary to present the theme to a particular
audience: organise this with local leaders and send out invitations with
the time, date, place and agenda.

6. Give your presentation. Invite two fellow students to watch.

7. Write a ½ page report explaining the results and send this to your
teacher.
