Introduction:
In the book DNS Mozambique, Period 3 ''Hitting the Hearts'', Week 1 (pg. 392), it
states the following:

''Core Groups and Bus Groups draw conclusions about the trip: They gather their
own reports, interviews, photos, notes and research findings, articles, films, audio,
poems and more, all of which are produced during the trip''.

This passage gives you the chance to draw conclusions about what you have learned
about countries, the human condition, Africa and the world and The Poor. It also
gives you the chance to reflect on what you have learned on a personal level and as a
group, and how it has affected your character.

Using these conclusions you will write a poem with a good message you have
learned while travelling. Reflect on this message and simply turn it into poetry. In
order to write this poem you should know a few important and useful points
differentiating poetry from narrative text.

First you need a reason to write a poem.

What you want to say.
A good subject is one that closely affects you. It can be anything, or any feeling.
Poetry is a form of communication. It can be an emotion, humour, friendship ... –
taken from your experiences while travelling in Africa.

Finding the words.
Take some paper and start writing down several words on the subject you have
chosen. Try to create rhymes. You don’t have to think about it too much. Play
around and scribble words down. The more the better once you have decided on the
basics.

The first line
You don’t need to get it right straight away. You are free to write and delete
whatever you like, change it all around and leave the bare essentials…Jot down a
verb.

How do I rhyme?
There are several ways to make rhymes. In a poem with four lines (a, b, c, d), for
example, you can rhyme:

A with B and C with D (the first line with the second and the third line with the
fourth), or A with C and B with D (the first line with the third and the second line
with the fourth), or just B with D (the second line with the fourth). If you follow
these steps the poem will almost certainly be excellent.
You can also write free verse, which doesn’t rhyme at all.

Cutting out
When you have your poem, you start to cut it down. Poems are very concentrated –
any word that is not absolutely necessary should go out. You may end with a
fraction of what you started out with, but it does not matter.
With these few important tips, then, I’m sure you’ll be able to write a good poem.

Enjoy!
Good luck.
Directive:
1. Choose your own subject, with a good message, to write a good poem.

2. Write your poem, using the introduction as inspiration and following the
technical advice. Choose and arrange your words and lines any way you like.

3. Write several drafts of your poem, paying careful attention to the positioning of
stanzas, lines and rhymes.

4. Rehearse your recital until you bring it to life.

5. Before facing the public recite your poem to the core group.

6. Perform your poem to an audience or as part of a bigger show, or on another
occasion of your choice; invite your teacher and classmates.
