The task is to improve the content of your Journal so you hit people in the heart with your presentations.
Time:
hours
Introduction:
This task is to produce The Journal – the content you wish to bring to the public in a
14-days road trip.

The Journal is about hitting people in the heart with your message through speaking,
theater, poems, pictures, movies etc.

It is not an easy thing to hit people in the hearts. It is not only about the message, but
also about HOW you convey that message, so people listen.

History has many examples of public speakers with a message. Some of them you
have learnt about in other tasks. Here are a few more:

In Hyde Park in London there is a “Speakers Corner”, where people through decades
have taken the opportunity to stand up on a box and speak to people. Anyone can turn
up unannounced and speak about almost any subject. Speakers Corner has been
frequented by people like Karl Marx, Lenin, Kwame Nkrumah and George Orwell.
In a park in Milano Italy, the artist and activist Dario Foe has for years gathered
hundreds of people every weekend to listen to his readings of short stories.

The Swedish immigrant to the US and union activist Joe Hill, performed songs in the
streets to the tunes of Salvation Army songs, but with a different text – calling for
workers to unite. As soon as the police came, he changed the radical union text to that
of salvation army’s – so he changed “Solidarity Forever” to “Glory, Glory
Hallelujah”.

Bringing The Journal to the public is about you becoming public speakers – even if
you speak through theater, songs, picture and other media. One tip is to generate
simple sentences – or quotes – that you repeat in different ways through the
presentation so people remember. There are numerous examples of great quotes made
by people throughout history. One we have generated for the upcoming Peace
Conference is “Stop the wars – not the refugees”.

Producing The Journal is a major task in the Journal Period. It takes the combined
efforts of the team to produce a good Journal. And it takes practice to perform it.
The errand of this task is not to tell you what your Journal should be about. It is tips
of how you can speak so people want to listen to you. And to use these tips in your
production. The task goes hand in hand with the course “Gather materials from the
Service Period”, which is the foundation for the production of The Journal.
Directive:
1. Based on the materials you have gathered from The Service Period, you have
decided the message you want to bring to the public and in which form.

2. Consider what it means to “hit people in the heart”.

3. Watch the TED talk by Julian Treasure on “How to speak to people want to
listen” (F1).

4. Sign up for inspiration from: https://www.pinterest.com/JeniKemper/quotes-
that-hit-my-heart/

5. Use the inspiration from the TED talk and famous quotes to qualify your
product so you hit people in the heart.

6. Present the product with your improvements to the rest of the school for
comments.
