The task is to identify a relevant message to prepare and give in a speech at a specific time of your choosing or as part of a larger event.
Time:
hours
Introduction:
From your travel experience, you will come up with messages that you would like to
give the public. One of the ways of bringing these to the public is through a speech.

This task addresses how you can prepare yourself for a speech that sends out a
relevant message during one of the activities for “Bringing it to the Public”.

Before anything else, you have to come up with the message that you want to send
to the public. But what form should the message take? It should be one phrase.
How?

Imagine that during your travels, you visited many villages, towns and cities and you
discovered that malaria really is causing a great deal of suffering and death. You
could come up with the following message for the public:

“It is possible for any family to avoid catching malaria.”

How will you go and organise your speech to send out this message? You know that
a speech is made with words, by explaining something to people. So, you could start
by putting up a poster in public that invites people to participate in the speech.

Then you need to organise the structure of the speech so that it is easy for people to
follow and understand, and not too long. For example, you could structure a speech
about the example above, like this:

1. Present the facts that show that Malaria is an existing problem.
2. Present the facts that show that it is possible to avoid catching Malaria.
3. Present real proposals for what to do to stop mosquitoes reproducing in the
area.
4. Present real ways to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes.
5. Give the public the chance to ask questions and answer all questions with a
debate.
6. Thank everyone for participating.

Having structured the speech, you should rehearse what you are going to say.

Practice with your fellow students and ask them for comments about what you can
improve. You should be aware of your tone of voice, your gestures, pauses, the
speed at which you speak, you should be calm and self-assured that what you are
saying is right.

If possible, record your rehearsals so that you can evaluate yourself. By listening to
your voice, you can evaluate yourself and easily recognise what to improve and
how.

Remember that this is not merely a school exercise; it is a real speech to a real, not
imaginary, audience. People like to hear about things that are relevant to their lives.
So, go and prepare your speech.

Get to work.
Good luck!
Directive:
1. On your own, come up with three messages that you consider to be important for
the public to hear, using what you experienced on your travels in Africa.

2. Invite your teacher and explain to him why these messages are important, with
ideas about how to present them. Use your teacher’s comments to choose the
final message that you will present.

3. Choose one of the messages and write one page about the content and an
explanation of why it is relevant.

4. Prepare a speech to send out the message to the public. Explain how you will
develop your speech.

5. Prepare everything that you need to give the speech to a specific audience:
arranging things with local leaders, invitations, warnings, date, time, place,
agenda.

6. Give your speech. Invite two fellow students to watch.

7. Write ½ page about the results and send this to your teacher.
