The task is to write a poem with a good message that you learned on your trip and then to recite the poem to an audience – as part of a larger event or at a time you choose.
Time:
hours
Introduction:
Consider this quotation taken from the teacher-training book:

“The Core Groups and Bus Groups come to conclusions about the trip: they gather
together their reports, interviews, photographs, notes, investigation results, articles,
files, audio files, poems and more that they have produced during the trip.”

This passage provides space for you to conclude on what you learned about the
countries, the human condition, about Africa, the world and about the Poor. And to
also come to conclusions about what you learned on a personal and group level and
how this has affected your personality.

Using these conclusions, you will write a poem with a message about what you
learned on the trip. Reflect on the messages and transform them into simple poems.

To write this poem, you should know some important and useful information about
what makes a poem different to a narrative text.

Before anything else, you need a reason to write a poem.

What you want to talk about.
A good subject is one which moves you. This could be a thing, or a feeling. Poetry
is a form of communication. It could be emotion, humour, friendship… using what
you experienced on your travels in Africa.

Freeing words.
Get a piece of paper and write down any words that have anything to do with the
subject you have chosen. Try to find other words that rhyme with these words. Don’t
think about it too much. Play around crossing out words and writing new ones. The
more words you have, the better, because later you can choose the best ones.

The first line.
You don’t need to get the meaning of the first line right straight away. You are free
to write and re-write as much as you want; move things around and leave only what
is necessary…

How to rhyme?
There are various ways of rhyming words. For example, in a four line poem (A, B,
C, D), you can rhyme:

A with B and C with D (the first with the second and the third with the fourth), or A
with C and B with D (The first with the third and the second with the fourth), or just
B with D (the second and the fourth line). If you follow these steps, it is very
possible that you will write an excellent poem.

There are also poems that have no rhyming lines, which you are also free to choose
to write.

Cut
When you have already written your poem, begin to cut it. Poems are concentrated –
any word that is not absolutely necessary can be cut. You may find that your final
poem is a fraction of what you had at the beginning, but this is okay.

With this short, important lesson, I am sure that you will be able to write a good
poem.

Enjoy!
Directive:
1. Choose a theme with a good message that you have written to write a poem
about.

2. Write your poem, using the introduction for inspiration and technical advice.
Choose and organise the words and the lines as you want them.

3. Practice reciting your poem, observing the proper placement of stanzas, verses
and rhyme.

4. Rehearsing the recitation of the poem can actually be what gives it colour and
life.

5. Before taking it to the public, recite your poem for the core group.

6. Present your poem to an audience or as part of a larger event. You could also
recite it at another time of your choosing. Invite your teacher and fellow students.
