The task is to interview a defined group of people and transmit their message by creating portraits in a form of a small book or an exhibition that could be then shared in a physical and a digital form.
Time:
hours
Introduction:
You have a chance to encounter diverse people. There is a story behind each of them.

Many of the stories are interesting. Many of the stories are important. Some of them
make you shiver. Some of the stories should be shared with the whole world, yet the
people carrying them shout but remain unheard, scream up loud but are silenced.

What, if you were the one to break this silence? That’s what teachers do. Creating a
portrait is an excellent idea to bring an individual to the Public. Putting many portraits
together forms more than a group of individual portraits. It shows a pattern, similarities
and differences. It puts represented people in a wider perspective, by connecting
stories, draws a broader picture of a subject. Portraits are a discovery and an
investigation.

When defining your It, first, you need to identify a group of people you want to learn
and teach about.

The people you choose should be relevant to know about for your students, for you or
maybe for everybody… or a group that feels about right to talk about. It is especially
worth to choose those who are excluded, misunderstood, not known, in order to focus
on fighting prejudice. You could try to present the Poor, the marginalised or other
people with their struggles to put different perspective at comfortable lives of most of
the Europeans. You could also show people’s courage as an inspiration and a tribute.

They will be your It.

The group should be defined, so you would be able to investigate a certain pattern,
usually geographical or social. It could be about people from Morocco of different ages
and genders, them coming from the same village to illustrate the life there. There could
be people from different places - cities, their suburbs, rural areas, rich and poor - to
have a glimpse of a society as such. What if you focused on children only? Across
countries, or even children from one village only? The unemployed from some
European suburbs are not necessarily listened to, which might be even truer for the
elderly with special needs.

Then, you will need to take pictures. The faces are always interesting. They express
emotions. Seeing the whole person, especially in action, tells us something more, if it is
a purpose. What about… the photographs of hands? Hands with coloured nails soft and
smooth, hands tired of age, hands worn out from scythe and hatchet, red skin slightly
cracked from cold or burnt from scorching sun. Or maybe you need to leave the person
anonymous?

Portraits are more than just pictures. Actually, photographs might be only a tiny part of
the whole project. According to your interest, you must decide on questions. Asking
about family, education, work, living conditions, or a trail made by a refugee. How do
they see future or what are their views upon other people? What do you like, what do
you dream of? Think the questions through, they need to be well-understood by an
interviewee. You might need to adjust them person after person but it would be pity to
change them because asking exactly the same questions has some investigative power.
Or you can ask everybody something else if that’s what’s best.

The information collected need to be put in a form of some kind. A small book or an
exhibition are perfect choices. Think about your Public and circumstances in which you
are going to meet them: which product will be more successful in conveying your
message? Pay attention to the power of Internet: once created, it can be shared
physically and digitally.

Usually, you will have more information than you can possibly introduce. You will
probably need to trim or reformulate or sometimes even skip somebody. But always, it
is a big responsibility to keep the meaning intact, even if it is inconvenient, or if there is
no agreement about the grammar. It is a question of ethics and science.

Pictures with descriptions on the wall or a small book in hand, and you are ready to
bring It to the Public. Have you remembered to write who you are? An introduction
would also do a lot of good.
Directive:
The length of the project decided by the Core Group: 16+ hours

1. Define the It and specify who is your Public. Who will be your interviewees and why?
Write down your considerations and present the final choice. [2 hours]

2. Prepare questions for your interview. Explain why you chose these questions. [1
hour]

3. Decide on pictures you are going to take. What do you want them to represent and
why? [1 hour]

4. Go out and make your interviews. Ask your questions, take pictures and be ready to
listen. Write all the answers down. Recorder could be helpful but you have to inform
the interviewees that you are using it. [4+ hours]

5. Create a small book or an exhibition. [4+ hours]

6. Discuss your choice regarding:

-The information presented in your product.
-The composition of pictures and text.
-The layout.
-Any other relevant questions. [3 hours]

7. Consider what is the outcome you expect from the product when shared.
What is the value of your product if printed? What its value, if shared on-line? How
are you going to use the product? Write down your considerations. [1 point]

8. If possible, share your considerations and feedback you received from the viewers of
your product and evaluate the project. [*2 hours - optional]

Send the answers to points 1, 2, 3, 6, and 7 (also 8 if chosen) together with the digital
version of the product to your tutor.
