The task involves making and painting a Frieze about your travels or about big issues facing the world or Mozambique and then displaying this in a public place, using it to show, explain, respond to and discuss relevant issues.
Time:
hours
Introduction:
A frieze is a series of paintings placed next to each other in a line, in our case, a line
of 10 metres, which from the first to the last picture represent a story that the creator
or creators want to communicate.

In Mozambique there is a tradition of using friezes as political art. In Chimoio, for
example, there is a huge frieze about Mozambique’s liberation from colonialism.

At our university, you can find work by Lin Utzon (10/2008) on the cafeteria wall.

This is not actually a frieze, but a mural. It does not tell a story. It is an amazing
piece of work that doesn’t only send out a message, it is also very beautiful. It is a
good idea to look at, analyse and reflect on the message that it is giving.

If we look carefully at ceramic work, used to decorate kitchens or churches and even
at some clothing, we can find friezes. Many cultures, including Chinese, Muslim and
Ancient Greek cultures, used frieze work on many objects that are today found in
museums.

On this task you will be busy making and painting a frieze on a sign, wall or cloth
about your travels, or about big issues facing the world or Mozambique. You will
then display this in a public place, and use it to show, explain, respond to and
discuss relevant issues.

We hope that the frieze calls people’s attention and draws them in to share
knowledge, experience and learning generated by our university.

Good luck with this artwork.
Directive:
1. Look at some pictures for inspiration on how to create friezes.

2. Then decide on the message that you want to transmit or the story that you want
to tell. Create and paint a frieze about your travels, or about big issues facing the
world or Mozambique. It should be a 10-metre frieze on a wall, piece of plywood
or cloth, which will not spoil the beauty of the OWU campus.

3. Invite all the other groups to admire your frieze.

a. Make any finishing touches and display it in a public place.

b. Write an explanatory text about your frieze to answer any future
questions.
