Introduction:
Africa has a rich cultural tradition for arts and folklore.

Each tribe has its traditions and tales. Children in rural areas still grow up with the
elders telling folktales around the fire at night – usually in return of fetching water or
firewood.

There are numerous folktales from all over Africa and in recent years some efforts
have been put into gathering them for print and distribution. But still most of them are
simply just memorized by the people telling them. They explain how things came to
be the way they are, what is good and bad behavior and ethics.

Painters, poets, sculptors and other types of artists are also specific for each region and
across Africa their art varies greatly from region to region. We talk about wood
carving, tie & dye, stone sculptures, paintings on wood or canvas, making decorative
baskets out of straw, making masks for ceremonial dances…

In this task you will prepare and Open Sunday or common program at the project
where you have invited some local artists to come to show, share and tell.

The event itself is not part of this course.
Directive:
1. Identify local artist by asking people around you at the project and in the
community.

2. Decide the date, time and place for the event.

3. Visit the artists and invite them to come and share their art. Be specific about
how each of the artists are going to do just that – performing, demonstrating,
making an exhibition, telling stories about the specific art form…

4. Once you have the agreements you put together a program for the event.

5. Preparing and holding the event itself is outside of this course.

6. After the event you send a report along with pictures from the event to your
teacher.
