Introduction:
The learning, despite being universal and happening all the time, is not as simple as it
might appear at first sight. The psychologists have not yet agreed on which aspects are
the most important ones in the process of learning. As the psychologists investigated
the learning, they reached different conclusions concerning what is fundamental in
order to understand the very process of learning.

And this, in a way, justifies the arising of different theories (schools) to explain the
learning. In this task, you will focus your attention on two principal pedagogical
schools, the behaviorist school – based on behaviorism – and the constructivist school –
based on constructivism. In order to understand the context in which we will talk about
these two schools, we will analyze the following two situations:

Situation-A: You have a teacher who believes that for his pupils to learn they
require stimulation.

Situation-B: You have another teacher who takes as his starting point the
necessity of his pupils being interested and having own expectations in order
to learn.

In situation-A, we have a teacher who agrees with the behaviorists. Who believes that
his pupils in order to learn a new behavior have to be stimulated. Using stimulation,
they succeed in teaching new behaviors to animals such as dogs, rats and pigeons and
from this they conclude that human beings should be taught in the same way.

In situation-B, we have a teacher who agrees with the constructivist psychologists. The
teaching is centred in the pupil. The pupil is treated as a whole person. The learning is
organized through activities which make the pupils active and refflective.

As you can see, the way in which the teacher deals with the pupils and place them in
the process of teaching-learning, is based on how he thinks that they are or should be
taught. It depends on how he learnt. Have you already seriously considered the
following question?

Why is it that you teach the way you do?

When studying these two schools, you must gather ideas and also make an auto-
evaluation of the way in which you realize your own teaching-learning of the children
in primary school.
Directive:
1. Read the file F1 and extract the main principles in behaviourism and in constructivivsm.

2. Read file F2 and compare the presented learning theories. Considere the pro et con in
the different theories in relation to teaching and learning.

3. Extract the characteristics of the different “Schools” about education, behaviorism,
constructivism, social learning and engaged learning.
Consider which trends within education you find useful for your work as a teacher.

4. File F3 is for inspiration and overview.

5. Write an article of no less than 300 words in which you express your findings,
and make it clear how you look upon constructivism and behaviorism.

6. Present the article to your micro group before sending it to your teacher.
