The task is to become familiar with the pedagogical ideas of Anton Makarenko as expressed in his book “The Road to Life”
Time:
hours
Introduction:
Anton Makarenko was a teacher and an educator, as you are. Maybe you will be asking:
What did he do to deserve special attention from us all?

This is a legitimate question when it comes to studying about the life and work of a person.
We make this question to learn from his example.

From Makarenko, you can learn many things for yourself. I will present some lessons, only
some, because then you will deepen your knowledge about life and his work by reading
about it.

The first thing you learn from Makarenko is that he was a full time teacher, morning,
afternoon and night. He felt that he realized what he wanted with his life, when he was
living with the students - children, adolescents and youth. His life was that of a teacher at
all times. He did not work for a limited time, or left for the week-end. He worked every
day. You may ask: what did he get out of that? He made the success of his work, he saw
children, adolescents and young people grow up healthy and well educated to be good
people, active in society, with good character. He was happy with that. What do you think
about this example?

He knew what he wanted to achieve with his work – to educate children, adolescents and
youth, regardless of their social status, with family, without family or abandoned to their
fate or poor. And he was willing to do everything within his capacity to achieve these
objectives. What you think about that?

He knew the importance of teamwork, the importance of each one committed to the
objectives of the collective, the importance of trust and value the others had a great respect
for their fellow teachers and students, regardless of their age. He never worked alone. He
always worked in a team, and he became a respected leader who defended the goals of the
collective, of what was agreed in common. Many times he was making plans to discuss and
decide with the teachers and students.

How do you engage as a part of a work team? Do you think as a teacher that it is good to
follow the example of Makarenko?

Makarenko was brave to undertake educational activities. He knew when it was necessary
to make a sacrifice and he took work as something personal and collective. He lived with
students at all times, be it difficult, sad and happy. He never abandoned the students. He
had a great love for the teachers and students. He knew how to defend them to avoid
harmful attacks and he could guide them when they failed. He was not selfish. Do you
consider it important to you?

The relations between Makarenko, the teachers and the students were not bureaucratic or
hierarchical. They were human relations between people who were fighting together for
education of the students, and they were placed as leaders of their own education.
Makarenko was able to create an environment of family, brotherhood, comradeship and
friendship between all, and all contributed to the success.

This is just a little, very little of what we - you, me, his colleagues and other teachers - can
learn from the work and the results of Anton Makarenko. Makarenko's life is not fiction, it
was not an imagination, it happened. Makarenko did not write a textbook about teaching,
he wrote to tell about his experiences with students, teachers, workers, and the surrounding
communities.

Think about it, learn from Makarenko and feel compelled to be a good teacher, an active
educator.

That is what this task is for.

Write a summary and explain about Makarenko to your micro group;
advocate for how you all can make use of his ideas in your teaching.

4.
