The task is to study and evaluate Hewett’s “Treatise on Pedagogy for Young Teachers” and extract valuable principles for your teaching.
Time:
hours
Introduction:
To talk about Hewett, let’s start by asking you an apparently simple question:
Can anybody teach children? Your immediate answer might be “NO! The person
needs to have training and preparation to be able to teach children.” I think so, too, and
so did Hewett.

The pedagogical thinking of Hewett – Hewett pedagogy – became known when he
wrote and published his “Treatise on Pedagogy for Young Teachers”. His ideas and
principals are presented in this work.

Did you know that you could do the same thing? Systemize your ideas, thoughts and
educational experiences, express them in the form of a book and have it published. This
is what Hewett did and as such he caused a great deal of debate and influence.

Hewett viewed the primary school as the foundation for the training and formation of a
person’s character. For him, the primary school should be seen as something serious
that requires the society to pay attention to it. He criticized the improvisation that
primary schools are often subjected to, such as, which has become almost normal for us
to see nowadays, teachers without training, trees as classrooms and overcrowded
classes.

Hewett went further and wanted people to realize that teaching children should be done
by professionals who embrace the profession with their heart, mind and hands. He also
wanted for successful primary school teaching to be well rewarded.

Hewett held the hope that primary school teachers would one day realise that society
was not ungrateful to them, but that they, the primary school teachers, must fight for
the prestige of their profession by doing good quality work. What does this mean to
you? It means that prestige will not just appear overnight; it is good results (children
who know how to read and write, how to do sums and who show knowledge and skills)
and the good conduct of each teacher that will create prestige for the profession.

Hewett also published some principles. One of his principles was:

“In all education work, the habits acquired during training are more important than
the knowledge acquired.”

In reflecting on Hewett’s ideas and principals you should also think about yourself, and
of the primary schools, teachers and the communities that you already know so that
you can construct your dream of becoming a better teacher for your country and for the
world.

Enjoy.
Directive:
1. Read the file (F1).

2. Extract the basic findings on Hewett’s teaching advices and
perceptions.

3. Make an article on no less than 300 words describing the
principles you find useful for your own teaching practice.

4. Send the article to your teacher for comments.
