The Task is to learn about Rousseau and why he considered curiosity a vital development process to all humans.
Time:
hours
Introduction:
Jean-Jacques Rousseau was a western philosopher in the 18th Century. He was well
know for his views and ideas and had many major influences in the world in regards to
philosophy, politics, education, literature, autobiographies and music.

In 1778 he died and was buried along side other French national heroes which signals
his importance in that era.

I, who made this task, think it is very important to explore his views and the life that he
lead. Rousseau held the view that “Man is good by nature” assuming that all children
are like sponges of their surroundings; he held strong views about how all children are
exactly equal at birth, and that it is the influences of society that determines whether
the child develops into “a good” or “a bad” person.

When working with this task please remember, that Rousseau was living from 1772 to
1778, and that situations are very different in the society today, as well as within
different countries and cultures.

As a teacher I consider his views about children and their surroundings similar to my
own views. You however, might disagree with his ideas and feel that another ‘thinker’
has a more relevant view of development that is more towards what you think.

Enjoy studying this task!
Directive:
1. Read the file (F1) about Rousseau, his life, his ideas
and the time in which he lived.

2. Write a short essay reflecting on how a child’s curiosity
drives the child to learn and what consequence this
should have on how a teacher prepare and organizes his
lessons.

3. Take a stand to the statement that “All children are
perfectly designed organisms and ready to learn from
their surroundings, but due to malign influence of
corrupt society, they often fail to do so” and discuss
your opinion with your micro group.

4. Send a summary to your teacher
