The task is to study and understand Rousseau’s thoughts on education and to be able to explain the characteristics
Time:

Introduction:
Rousseau, above all, inspires us by having been self-taught, someone who studies
alone, without going to school. Why does this inspire us? Because a teacher should
have this ability to study alone and discover things by thinking alone. No university of
that time could boast that Rousseau had been its student. He had little training, but
when reading his work, the intellectuals recognised that they were dealing with
someone whose knowledge they should respect.

We are respected for our work. That’s what it will be like for you, too. Members of
the communities, children, teenagers, young and old adults from both sexes will
respect you for what you do. You will open up their hearts to you because of this.

Initially, Rousseau published his thoughts on children and education through a book
that told of the education of a boy named Emilio. In this book he defended the theory
that a person is good by nature, he is not born evil, but that over time, as he grew, evil
was learnt from the environment. Of course, with these ideas, which were
scientifically advanced in relation to thinking at that time, he encountered various
problems with religious leaders and governments.

Here we learn from Rousseau to be thinking teachers who do not conform to current
discoveries, but who are always searching for more knowledge of children and how to
educate them.

He also made a huge contribution to developmental psychology by being the first to
present the theory of stages in child development, which other psychologists later
elaborated on. He also called attention to the fact of a child being a child, very
different to an adult and that to help development, the teacher should bear in mind the
child’s curious nature.

The influence of Rousseau’s ideas can still be felt today. We understand children’s
natural curiosity. They want to know everything. For a child, discovering knowledge
is a great adventure and she enjoys it because it satisfies her curiosity. The biggest
challenge to the teacher’s creativity is “How can I take advantage of a child’s
curiosity in order for her to learn?” You should answer this question with real ideas
for your lessons. It is a huge challenge because there are no ready-made recipes for
how to do this. Here is an example to inspire you:

If the next 20 classes in 1 st grade mathematics are about writing the numbers from one
to five the teacher could – with her pupils – give each group of some plastic cards. On
each card there is a number. Each group also has some sticks and stones. In the
group, the pupils play with the objects to understand the number that is shown on the
card. The teacher helps each group.

This task is a good chance for you to be able to broaden your knowledge of
Rousseau’s teachings and critically reflect on them.

Enjoy.
Directive:
1. Read the file (F1) describing Rousseau and his philosophy.

2. Skim his famous work “Emile”.

3. Summarize Rousseau’s educational thoughts, paying special
attention to his thoughts on how a child’s curiosity drives the
child to learn, and what DMM Action 5 consequence this should
have on how a teacher prepares and organizes his lessons.

4. Exchange your views with a friend and discuss your findings.

5. Improve your summary and send it to your teacher for
comments.
