Introduction:
The schools as centers of education of the next generation are important institutions in
a society. But they are nothing without teachers.

In the history of humanity, there were many teachers or pedagogues before the
existence of any school.

In the reading societies, the teacher becomes a person who also transfers academic
skills. Along the history of pedagogues, they have had great importance in the transfer
of knowledge to children and young people. Most of them are now forgotten. But a few
of them stand out because of their particular activities.

PAULO FREIRE

He was born in 1921 in Recife, Brazil. He became a famous pedagogue who devoted
his teaching to the poor and oppressed in his country. He was educated as a lawyer but
preferred to work for the poor, because from his youth he had chosen to the fight
against poverty and oppression.

When Brazil became dominated by military rule, Freire was imprisoned because of his
progressive ideas about education.

Later, he returned to his birthplace where he promoted alphabetization of poor workers
and peasants. The idea of Freire was that at the same time they learned to read and
write, they should also learn about life and reality.

After the agrarian reform, the introduction of a Christian democracy and the organizing
of agriculture by the United Nations, Freire published his first book on education as a
practicing freedom.

The book was well received and the pedagogue was invited to visit Harvard University
in 1969. The following year, he wrote his most famous book, “Pedagogy of the
Oppressed”, which was published worldwide in several languages.

Paulo Freire worked as a consultant for the World Council concerning educational
reform in Africa, especially in Guiné-Bissau and in Mozambique.

Paulo Freire was a person who cleared up and convinced the poor peasants of new
forms of looking upon the world and doing things differently. There are today still poor,
both peasants and others, and there are people in many versions of being oppressed,
and which need a language and means to conqueur their lives.

In this task, you will concentrate on learning about Paulo Freire and his pedagogy of
the oppressed.
Directive:
1. Read the file (F1).

2. Discuss in your micro group the inspiration you get from
Freire’s work.

3. Write an article 1½ page long on Freire’s ideas on
pedagogy and how these can help you in teaching.

4. Get the article approved by your teacher before publishing
it in the school’s newspaper.
