Introduction:
This is a very special task. It is special because it discusses a real school famous for
its pedagogy, principals and success – Summerhill school in England. Maybe you
have never heard of this school, but it exists and was founded by A.S. Neill in 1924.

Whenever somebody comes up to you and says “Such and such a School is a good
school, all the children know how to read and write really well.” Your first reaction is
to ask: How? Why? What do they do? How do they do it? You ask these questions
because you want to know the secrets of success for teaching and educating children,
teenagers, young people and adults. You want to be successful as a teacher and see
your pupils succeeding in life because of the good education that they got from you.

Summerhill is famous for its success, its methodology and its principles. It is very
useful for you to learn about this school so that you can get to know about its
pedagogical methodology and use this experience as a primary school teacher.

One thing you should learn from Summerhill’s pedagogical methodology is that you
must be aware that changes in education, innovations, and new methodology are not
made by the “bosses” of education. It is only the teacher in dealing directly with the
children who can introduce innovation. You can study a lot and have great
educational ideas but this will not help anyone if the teacher does not implement these
ideas in practice. Only those who are part of the teaching-learning experience can
improve the quality of education because that is the quality of their work. A.S. Neill
was a teacher who started thinking progressively and was able to achieve success at
Summerhill school.

This task is a good opportunity for you to learn about Summerhill school and identify
the ideas behind its ideal and find out if these ideas could be useful to you in the
future.

Enjoy.
Directive:
1.Read the texts about Summerhill and the introduction at their
Website (F1): http://www.summerhillschool.co.uk/pages/index.html

2. At this website you will also find the 5 School policy
statement (F2).

3. Figure out your own opinion of this statement and write 2
pages about this also explain the “Summerhill view” of human
nature

4. Make a poster, describing the ideas of Summerhill School.

5. Show the poster to your teacher and send your 2 pages to him
for his comments.

6. Put the poster up in your groups’ classroom.
