Introduction:
We were discussing a lot about how to realize, in primary school, a child centered
education. Then we decided to make a simple practical experiment in a rural primary
school. The experiment consisted in giving the child the possibility to choose the
material to be studied. It became an experiment in grade 1, Mathematics, in a class of
80 pupils. How was it done?

1. We decided to organize the class in 15 micro-groups, each of 5 or 6 pupils.
Every micro-group should choose its own coordinator.

2. In the mathematics lesson, we told the pupils that they would learn to read
and write the numbers from 1 to 5. All the children already knew how to
count from 1 to 5.

3. We gave to each micro-group 5 cards with the numbers 1 to 5 written on
them respectively. We asked each child to choose the number to be learnt in
that lesson. There was some discussion in the micro-groups, but in the end
everybody chose a number.

4. Every child started to train his reading and writing. There were small stones
and sticks as materials for illustrating each quantity. We supported all the
pupils in the micro-group. We used mutual learning, because we had said
that in the micro-group the best pupil was the one who knew how to learn
from the others and also teach the others. The best group is the one where all
learnt. The task to learn became individual with support from the micro-
group.

5. Some pupils from grade 5 came, on our invitation, to support voluntarily the
small pupils in grade 1.

6. After 1 week, all the 80 pupils knew how to read and write the numbers from
1 to 5.

Through this small experiment, we understood in practice how important it is to make a
child centered education. There are many challenges to the teacher’s creativity for this
to become reality. What do you think about starting to place the pupil in the centre of
his own learning, by teaching the many pupils:

-To be organized in micro-groups

-To pay attention to the differences

-Investigating the mutual learning

-Making the learning individual

-Making the micro-group a support for the individual learning

-Creating friendships in the class.

In this task you will deepen your knowledge and your understanding of realizing a
child centered education in primary school, taking systematically care of each pupil in
your class.
Directive:
1. Read the files (F1;F2;F3) about 1) Meeting individual needs
with your young learners, 2) Differentiation – what and
how?, and 3) Development of the child: growth milistones
(from six to 12 years)”.

2. Based on the files read and adding your own knowledge,
make a list of points where the child must be taken good
care of in order to develop well.

3. Write a manual for your own use in the primary school.

4. Send the manual to your teacher for comments.
