The task is to imagine using reward, punishment and discipline as methods for learning and to get an opinion about the view of human nature behind this
Time:

Introduction:
Whenever we talk about reward, punishment and discipline we are talking about
doing something to someone to make them behave and react in the way that we want
or as rules demand. We give a reward to a child that behaves well and we punish a
child who behaves badly.

Because teachers work with people, and mainly with children, they are always
concerned with the attitude, dedication, performance and determination of these
children so that they make the most of their learning opportunities. Some children
arrive late, others do not do their homework, others are disruptive during class, some
sleep in the middle of the lesson, others miss a lot of classes and some get very low
grades, amongst other negatives. All of this worries the teacher who wants to have a
disciplined, dedicated and successful class and as such, he tends to react by using
punishment or reward.

Punishment, in whatever form, works with fear. The child is afraid of punishment and
so tries her level best to be rewarded. How far does this serve education? What
philosophical thinking is behind this? Is it possible to educate a critical, creative
citizen within the limits of punishment, reward and discipline?

This task is a good opportunity for you to think critically about using reward,
punishment and discipline as learning methods and to form an opinion of the view of
human nature behind this methodology.
Directive:
1.Read the file F1 about B.F. Skinner’s research, and File 2 Discussion about Skinners work.
Find out if his work applies to human beings.

2. Find 3 examples of what and how to teach by using reward and
punishment and write them down.

3. Discuss your 3 examples with a fellow student, and find out, if
you think the learning could benefit more if using other methods.

4. Now take a teacher who use reward, punishment and discipline,
and describe how he look at himself as a teacher, and how he look
at his students, his learners. What is the human outlook?

5. Take your own stand and compose an essay of 2 pages about
this theme. Send it to your teacher for his comments.
