The task is to express yourself about four basic truths about children.

Introduction:
Teacher Semedo will never forget the child Chano, a 7 years old pupil of his in grade 1.
Chano was “Only Himself”. He would never allow himself to agree with the rest of the
pupils in his class. If the others said ‘yes’, Shano would say ‘no’. If they said ‘no’, he
would say ‘yes’, defying everybody.

If the teacher brought fruits, for example bananas, for counting in the mathematics
lesson, the class had to pay attention, because Chano might suddenly, without any
authorization, eat some of the bananas. Looking at Chano, he was, physically, the
smallest one. A minor push from the others would immediately make him scream and
run to the teacher. Chano always demanded attention and, in this way. Chano often was
a headache to the teacher and the classmates.

In primary school, there are many cases like that of Chano. Unfortunately, there are
many teachers who in their work do not know how to deal with that kind of behaviour.
Through his work “The Art of Educating Children”, Ron Clark tells us about his
experiences with pupils in order to educate them, taking into account their particular
characteristics.

Ron Clark summarizes his experiences and reflections in “Four Universal Truths about
Children” and in “55 Rules for a Prize-Winning Teacher to Educate Pupils with marks
10 in the Classroom and in Life”. This may, some day, inspire any teacher to likewise
summarize his experiences in such a form that other teachers may take advantage of it,
as you will now be doing.

In this task, you will learn what he tells us in his introduction about how he adhered to
an education that he didn’t like and how he passed to love his profession as a primary
school teacher, the profession which he considers “the Art of Educating Children”.

In this task, you will also get to know in detail what he calls “The Four Universal
Truths about Kids”. They are:

Kids need and like structure.
Kids will work hard for you, if they like who you are as a person.
Kids like to know what is expected of them.
Kids like to know they are cared for.

This task is the beginning of your sharing critical reflections and experiences with the
others, based on the rich experiences of Ron Clark in the whole of Section 13: Ron
Clark’s Essential Rules for Teachers.

Enjoy it!
Directive:
1. Read the (F1) introduction page xvii and ( F2) the pages 165-
171 of Ron Clark’s book about how to bring up children: “The
Essential 55”.

2. Extract the points most essential in what you have read, form
your own opinion about the issues, and write it down.

3. Write the three or four most interesting issues as statements,
make them public on the school’s notice board, and invite
everybody who want to discuss the statements to meet with you
at a given time for discussion.

4. Enjoy the discussion and try to prove the statements wrong;
relate your discussion to your own experiences from primary
school.

5. Make a summary of the discussion, concluding on what new
you have learned about children from solving this task, and send
it to your teacher for comments.
