Introduction:
Ron Clark says,

“Stand up for what you believe in. You shouldn’t take no for an
answer if your heart and mind are leading you in a direction that
you feel strongly about.”

I have seen newly graduated teachers who with much enthusiasm went to primary
school with the conviction that they would use active methods to do a good work with
the children and the community. And they begin very well. But after some months,
they lose their courage and fall into the routine of some veteran teachers. And in this
way, the quality of the teaching doesn’t change to the better in primary school.

In this situation, the new teachers didn’t succeed in maintaining their courage to stand
firmly, to defend and to implement their modern pedagogical and didactical conviction
against all adversities.

To have the courage to defend your conviction is not something that comes by itself.
You have to train it.

This task is a good opportunity for you to develop your critical reflection on how to be
courageous and stand up for what you believe in.

Enjoy it!
Directive:
1. Read pages (F1) 138-143 in Ron Clark’s book “The
Essential 55”.

2. Extract the main points of the story and write them down.

3. Mention all the points where it would have been much
easier for Mr. Clark to have stepped down from his opinion
instead of carrying on.

4. What was the effect of the whole class? Could the same
effect have been reached by using other methods do you
think?

5. Make a summary of what you have learned from studying
this task, and send it to your teacher for comments.
