The task is to investigate and gauge future trends of production and economy in the town and in Europe as a whole, talking with business people, workers, politicians and officials
Time:
hours
Introduction:
The increasing global competition causes rapid changes within almost all branches and
especially within production and economy. A country, wanting to be a part of the world
market, cannot block for eventual cheaper products from abroad and have to make its
products competitive in either prize or/and quality to secure its economy. In this way, what
happens in general in the world, can have a decisive effect on how the production and the
economy is organized locally. The question is to how extent a town, a region, a country can
organize its production and decide its economic fundament?

The main parts of production, of trade and of investments are done by transnational or
multinational corporations. They do not have a specific local or national concern unless it
is profitable. This leaves little space for local or national politicians to decide upon and
influence the production and the economy. The market-orientated or neo-liberal point of
view upon this issue points at that all have to adjust to the market, follow or die, or find
something with which they can compete. A social-liberal attitude could have as a major
concern that the economy and the production must be organized so that people in the area,
the country can survive, stay and eventually develop the area. Two policies that often
contradict each other.

One trend for the town and for Europe as a whole could thus be more centralization in
general, because the big companies overtake smaller companies to position themselves in
the mutual competition with other big companies. A diagram of the world´s transnational
companies will illustrate their growth. This centralization has been fortified by the
economic crisis since 2008. A clear example is how the bank sector has “swallowed”
smaller banks throughout Europe. Many towns, areas have lost their local option for
investing or saving. The limit for this centralization is the regulations made to avoid cartels so to
secure some kind of competition.

This trend favours the production and financial centres, the big cities, where the big
companies are situated and the transactions of money and commodities take place.
Mumbai, Lagos, Paris etc. are steadily growing, the surrounding rural areas are de-
populated, businesses disappear and the local crafts are out-competed by industrial
products from the cities. This is the background for all the many marginalized areas all
over the world, with people left aside from the general development.

Another trend could be that the towns, the regions try to survive by special initiatives that
could generate new economical initiatives or maybe safeguard what is already. This will
need political initiatives, and maybe use of tax money to start extensive consulting
services, establish cheaper conditions for businesses to settle, support local trades etc. They
have to make sure they do not disregard the rules for competition laid out by the national
parliament or the EU, and this can be tricky, and sometimes the necessary tax money is not
even there.

The general picture is that the global market and the transnational companies have the
decisive say, with several important consequences. The companies place their production
where it is most favourable for them. The consequence is a strong pressure to all employed
in Europe to lower down their salaries, a weakening of the working conditions, and a
pressure for less political regulation. Another strong consequence is the centralization and
the generating of marginalized areas. The national states and the EU support financially the
poorer areas, but so far it has not changed the development.

What about people in general? This development really emphasises that alone you can do
nothing. There have been many examples of workers pressed to lower down the salaries
because the company have asked about this for its survival. There are many examples of
people leaving the areas because of lack of education possibilities, services etc.

There have also been examples on towns where people have gathered and organized the
town to be a better place for people to settle and thus support the local economy.
There have also been examples of workers taking over the company, when closed by the
owners and managed to continue the production.

There have been many examples of people protesting against a general worsening of their
conditions.

The global market – and the people. A dual that seemed decided on beforehand, but maybe
it is not so obvious.
