The task is to write an essay about the Science of the Doctrine of the Modern Method of Teaching and Learning.
Time:

Introduction:
''At OWU we use the Science of the Doctrine of the Modern Method of Teaching and
Learning as our crankshaft, around which a rich methodology turns, and inside
which a rich tapestry of content beautifies teaching and learning, while our
programs with their periods, shaped by extraordinary depth and elegance, are
constructs from which new knowledge streams because of it all.''

From Licentiate in Pedagogy, OWU 2011.

To write an essay about the Science of the Doctrine of the Modern Method of
Teaching and Learning – in short DMM – is not a simple task. You are going to
confront the theory of DMM, as you can study it in the texts, with the reality you
have experienced as a student.

Here are some points to consider:

1) Understand why it is a science, 2) understand the meaning of ''doctrine'', 3)
consider what makes the method modern, and 4) move in the tension field between
teaching and learning. These are not issues you necessarily must write about, but
you may make sure that you have an understanding of the overall idea of DMM.
The science part links DMM to pedagogical theory and method. Any science has its
theory and its method. The science of DMM is based on One World University's
philosophy of pedagogy with its many dialectics: the dialectic between hand and
mind, between studying from written sources and while traveling, between lectures
from the lectern and studies in the field, between principles and practice.

Doctrine is NOT to be understood in the meaning of religious doctrines, which are
given truths that a religious authority proclaims and everybody else (within that
particular religion) must believe in as truths.

Doctrine is to be understood in the meaning ''a set of ideas'' or ''a system of
thoughts''.

Your digging deeper into the understanding of DMM as a doctrine will call on your
own systematic thinking and your exploration of what the set of ideas that constitute
DMM consists of.

You will not find any one text that explains the doctrine of DMM. You will have to
study different texts, different examples of DMM study tasks, courses and
experiences, and you will rely on your own experiences as empiric proof of DMM
being a doctrine.

When it comes to this method being modern or not, you are again the one to explore
and consider. You will certainly find many very traditional ways of studying in the
DMM tasks – such as reading an article and having a debate or writing an essay, as
you are about to do now. The Doctrine of DMM claims that the method in its
totality is modern. What does modern mean, actually? Can reading a book be a part
of a modern method? It is your essay – so it will be your considerations about this
that will answer the questions!

And it all is for the sake of teaching and learning. You can look upon that part as
another dialectic relationship: teaching and learning go together, challenge each
other, change each other. That is why we call it a tension field. Unfortunately,
teaching sometimes exists without learning. Maybe you have experienced it during
many years in school. Does learning exist without teaching? Is teaching performed
by teachers only? And what does it have to do with DMM?

You have got 10 hours to write an essay about The Science of the Doctrine of the
Modern Method of Teaching and Learning. It is quite some time.

This introduction only serves to point out some of the aspects that you may touch
upon. The real source of your writing will be your reading or re-reading of articles
about the idea and policy of DMM, your experiences so far with using DMM – as a
student and maybe as a teacher, too – and creating new materials for DMM. Your
examples will illustrate your points, and your conclusions will draw on your
analyses.
Directive:
1. Read the introduction with the aim of drawing some main points for your
essay from it.

2. Consider your experiences with using DMM and maybe with creating DMM.
Consider which experiences can add more points for the essay, or put them
together with the main points you made in 1.

3. Get into the writing process. You may consult the file ''How to write an
essay''.

4. When you are done with the main writing, check your essay for logic and
coherence, for good argumentation and clarity of thought.

5. Make your improvements.

6. Go through the whole text again and check for errors.

7. You may want to get a second opinion from a fellow student.

8. Hand the essay in to your tutor and ask for his comments.
