The task is to understand and ponder over that learning is fundamentally an individual phenomenon and to appreciate how the DMM method is based exactly on this understanding while never cutting you off from interacting with others in the learning process
Time:

Introduction:
Learning individually is a responsibility of individual, it is important to have it in mind
when we think about learning or studying. Learning us such can be given or acquired.

When my grandfather is telling me how to ride a horse, or how to feed animals, he is
giving the knowledge which is taken by me. When we are small children it is easy for
grandfather to pass the knowledge because children are easy to make interested, also
they like to listen to their grandfather’s stories. Unfortunately as soon as we begin to be
older and smarter we stop listening to our parents or at least we start to disagree on
many small issues, often rebel against old style, old ways etc. However the knowledge
that has been passed to you is already in you and there is no way you can take it away.

As soon as we come to this world our parents start to teach us, that is something that is
inevitable, and so important for a persons entire life. As long as we are children our
parents carry the responsibility that we learn how to live in this world, it starts with
very simple things: start walking, eating, toilet, playing. Further as we grow we start to
become more and more separated from our parents, we go to school, we start playing
outside, we start interacting with bigger world outside the house we live in. At the
same time learning is also following us to outside, to the school, even to your friends.

We learn new things every day and the older we are the more we start to choose for
ourselves what to study, and what is not your interest. So if we look at our lives, we
will clearly see that as we grow older, learning process is becoming more individual.

There is no clear line when it should become completely individual, because it depends
from person to person from situation to situation.

There is a saying that “What you learn, you will not carry on your shoulders!”.

Knowledge that we acquire will stay with you, it is your money, your life, your house,
it is fundamentally yours and no one else. Learning can be compared with work. Many
know that those who are good at their work, get more money, more opportunities. So
those who learn a lot will get more knowledge and more opportunities. Theory sounds
easy, but to put it into practice that is a real challenge. In one hand we see that we learn
something every day, almost does not matter what we do, but in the other hand we
want to have quality knowledge, so we could actually use those thing in our life. Many
complain that the teacher is responsible for the poor knowledge of students. It is true
only if this teacher has taken the responsibility to make students learn. In that kind of
case it means that the student has no chance of thinking for himself, he can choose
teachers way or no way at all. From teacher’s perspective, you cannot know what
exactly students got from the lecture, because it is simply impossible to have a measure
on knowledge. So as a teacher the only thing you can do is to give as much information
as possible and hope that the students will extend their knowledge after the school in
some other ways.

DMM is a system where student has a chance to have freedom to choose, freedom to
have control over your own life, your own education, freedom to learn efficiently. Why
is it important to have freedom on your learning process? One of the answers would be,
freedom gives a quality in how we learn and further how much we get out of the
subject. DMM turns the responsibility to learn, from teacher to student. Student is
responsible for himself, his actions, his knowledge, so at the same level he is
responsible for his own learning. So in many cases if student is complaining about his
studies, he has no right to say that it is someone else fault except his own.

In this task you will learn that the learning process is always with you, that there
are opportunities to learn all around you. You shall learn to see and take those
opportunities. A lot of potential lies in interaction with people surrounding you, they
think different from you; therefore they can add new ways, ideas or solutions to your
learning so you become richer in knowledge and wiser in learnng.
Directive:
1. Read in the book “DNS in Africa” about studies page 123
to 128 (F1).

2. Write down what it means “to learn” and ponder on what
it means that “learning is fundamentally an individual
phenomenon”, write down how you understand it and
what it means for you in your job as a teacher.

3. Think again! and write examples of situations where you
have learned new things on your own, together with
others in a group, the whole class together or the whole
team together.

4. Analyze! And describe for each of the cases what was it
that made you learn; are you always learning? In what
situations have you not learned anything at all? Can other
people learn for you? Are some things better learned in
cooperation with others and why?

5. Write an essay about “learning and the value of
interacting with other people in the learning process”
relate it to your future job as a teacher and send it to your
teacher for comments.
