Introduction:
For a person to know the concrete realities, he must investigate. To investigate means
to seek facts that allow him to get to know a certain reality.

For example, many people talk about poor families in the rural areas, but do not know
how the economy of these families is – their production, their income, their expenses,
their partners, their solidarity. So, if you, as a teacher, pretend to know this reality, you
have to make an investigation. How? In a simple way, it might go as follows:

1. You have to define a topic, for example, “The economy of poor families in the
community of Marocanhe” and put a key question, which is the problem, “How
is the economy of the poor families in the community of Marocanhe?”

2. Prepare the most important questions to collect the needed facts about this
economy, for example:

a) How do they manage to get the money or the products for the expenses
for basic necessities? Which is their production, their work or the
services they are rendering?
b) Which are the essential basic expenses? To food, clothes, housing,
health, hygiene and education?
c) In cases of extreme difficulties, whom, beyond the family, do they ask
for help?

3. Choose the target group, that is, the persons you are going to ask, for example 20
poor families in the community of Marocanhe.

4. Make test interviews with 4 families to find out whether the questions are good
or need to be improved.

5. Make the interviews.

6. Organize and analyse the collected data and make the final report.

7. Publish the report.

This is the simplest form of an investigation for learning about a certain reality.

With this investigation you will, beyond the facts collected, learn to communicate with
other people, explaining to them the aims of the investigation and asking them to
answer your questions.

You can use the interview when you want to get facts from people, but beyond
interviews, there are many other techniques for collecting facts by investigation. For
example if you want to study a river, the method will be observation, because you will
observe in order to get to know the riverbed, the banks, the torrent and other facts
concerning the river.

Do you believe investigation can be used as a method in primary school? Yes, it can.
Here are some possible topics:

The history of my area
The medical plants in my community
The river that is close to my community
The most common diseases in my community

These topics can be developed into investigations through interviews and observations.
In this case, you will have to assist the pupils during the whole process.
This task gives you a good opportunity to study further how to use investigation to
learn more.

Enjoy it!
Directive:
1. Read the in the book (F1) DNS in Africa about investigation
as a method for learning page 173 to 178; read the pictures as
well as the text.

2. Select a small group of your fellow students to do the
investigation together with you; decide on a matter you want
to investigate either inside the school or outside the school;
decide what shall be your end product.

3. Select the keywords of the investigation; make a list of what
you want to find out about; make a detailed plan.

4. Carry out the investigation.

5. Make a written conclusion of “Investigation as a Method of
Learning”, and identify where it can be used in teaching the
children in the primary school; send it to your teacher for
comments.
