Introduction:
Many traditional schools and higher education institutions separate matters of hand
and matters of mind. Schools from primary schools to university level focus on
theoretical studies and class room teaching. Learning how to use your hands,
learning to be productive in practical work, being able to solve practical tasks and
learning about the material world and how it functions physically is normally not
included in the curriculum. It seems unnatural to make this divide. People are born
with a natural ability to use both their hands and their minds and if you do not use
both you lose some of your natural capacity to deal with all kind of situations and
challenges. Developing and combining matters of hand and matters of mind
develops the whole person. Poor people who have never had the chance to learn to
read and write rely on the knowledge they have got from their parents. They might
be quite skilled with their hands but in a changing world this is not enough and most
of them are struggling to survive. Most people with theoretical educations are in
terms of survival managing very well because of society’s reward of people with
education. But the majority of people well-educated or not, lack the ability to go new
ways, to challenge the way things are, to fight for a more human development for all
and sometime even the ability to create a meaningful life for themselves. Many
people are specialized in a very small area of life and lack insight and capacity to act
outside their specialisation. Though specialisation can be useful and necessary the
current divide between theoretical and practical knowledge and also between various
knowledge areas are destructive if we want to be able to create progress for all of
humanity.

We as humans need to develop all our capacities so we can face the great challenges
humanity today and in the future are confronted with in a holistic way.
Directive:

Evaluate the learning benefits your students get through the dialectic between
matters of hand and matters of mind.

4. Discuss point 3 with your team of students.

5. Write down a conclusion based on your own considerations and the discussion
with your students.

6. Send point 2 and 5 to your tutor.
