The task to understand the importance of combining theory and practice in your teaching and in the daily life at the school
Time:
hours
Introduction:
Theory and practice need to go hand in hand in life as well as in schools.

Most schools and educational institutions are only based on theory. This alienates
many students from reality and hence makes it harder for them to make the jump
from school to work or from education to taking on a profession like being a teacher.

Combining theory and practice is necessary to make things meaningful. Basically all
things are much better understood when you have the opportunity to practice them.

Practice gives an insight that you can not get from reading in books. Practice makes
you feel, see, hear and smell. Practice challenges you by often being unpredictable
because it takes place in real life. This is true for many fields of practice whether
your practice field is to teach children in a school, work with animals in a farm,
explore a piece of nature, or doing a practical task you have never tried before.

Theory on the other hand can give you a profound and deeper knowledge about all
kinds of subjects and thereby widening your perspective and in this way prepare you
for acting in the practice field as well as in daily life.

There is also another kind of connection between theory and practice that is worth
mentioning. Some people are very good at having the right opinions or saying the
“right” thing but in practice they actually do something else or even the opposite. To
learn to practice what you say and what you find right is very important as practice
in this connection counts more than words.

Many politicians are corrupted in the sense that they say one thing but do the
opposite. For example politicians saying they work for peace while initiating wars
around the world or they say they want to support the poor in Africa while voting for
laws that keep up an unfair trade system that hurts the poorest in the poor countries.

A DNS teacher should keep the banner high for always combining theory and
practice in education, in work, in life and in personal attitude and ethics.
Directive:
1. Read (F1) DNS Zambia book page 23-28.

2. Write down 5 examples of how you have combined theory and practice in
your teaching.

3. Describe one of the examples more thoroughly analyzing what it meant for
the students understanding of the subject.

4. Write 2 new ideas for combining theory and practice in your teaching.

5. Send then written examples to your tutor for comments.
