Introduction:
The first Travelling High School was started in 1970 in Denmark on a little island
called Fanoe. The duration of the school’s courses were 9 months, divided into 3
periods. The first period took place in Denmark and was a preparation period with
studies and practical preparations relevant for the next two periods. The second
period was a 6 months travel in old busses. The travel combined investigations and
travel experiences with theoretical studies about the world and the regions through
which the busses were passing. The travel for the first team at the Travelling High
School went from Denmark through Europe, Turkey, Iran and Afghanistan returning
through Iran, Kuwait, Iraq and home to Denmark through Turkey. The third period
was used for evaluating the experiences gained at the travel, producing materials and
making presentations at colleges, work places and schools. The third period was also
used for theoretical and practical studies of the Danish society. It was a very
revolutionary school program and one of its kinds in the world. The news about this
new school travelled fast around the country not least because the news were spread
by the students themselves. They enthusiastically travelled around the country
telling about the countries they had visited and people they had met and how it had
changed them personally and influenced their perspectives and aspirations for the
future. Soon enrolments from all corners of the country rolled in and the first
homestead for the school became too small. In 1972 the Travelling High School
moved to Tvind together with the new established Teacher training college called
Det Noedvendige Seminarium, in short DNS. Translated to English the name means
The Necessary Teacher Training college.

In this task you will read an excerpt from The Black Book - Report from the
Travelling High School First team, July 1970 to February 1971.

The students at the Travelling High schools are called participants and the teachers
at the first team were not called teachers but veterans. This was to make clear that
the school was no normal school with a hierarchal structure but it was build on the
collective forces of everybody with the plenary meeting as the school’s highest
authority.
Directive:
1. Read (F1) The Black Book - Report from the Travelling High School First
team, July 1970 to February 1971, page 88-92.

2. Give 5-10 examples of how the Travelling High school differed from ordinary
schools.

3. Give 5 examples of how the collective organization of the school affected the
learning process.

4. Give 5-10 examples of the learning benefits of studying while travelling
around the world.

5. Send your examples to your tutor.
