Introduction:
As incredible as it may sound, there are teachers that work with mixed classes
(mixed-grade classes). They are so-called because within the class there are pupils
from two or more different grades. The main reason for this problem is that there are
not enough teachers to teach ALL the children in primary education in the country.

One teacher, my colleague, worked with mixed classes for over 6 years at a rural
school in the countryside. I met him at a ZIP meeting. To get to the school he
travelled for two days by bicycle. He was responsible for the education of pupils
from the 1 st to the 5 th grade. From 7.30 to 10.00 in the morning, he taught a class of
100 pupils from the 1 st grade, from 10.30 until 13.00, he taught the 2 nd and 4 th grade.

From 14.00 he taught the 3 rd and the 5 th grade. He explained it to me by saying the
following: “What can I do? There are no teachers. I want the pupils to learn. I do the
best that I can.”

As a teacher destined to work in rural areas, you may also find yourself in this
situation. One day, you may also have to join your class to another because a
colleague is sick or has some other kind of problem that means they cannot be in
school. These are common situations. As such, it is important that you are prepared
to take on this reality.

This task is to help you to be prepared to work with a class that includes pupils of
different year groups. Enjoy.
Directive:
1. Ask your teacher at DNS for his opinion on the issue.

2. Seek advice from your District Director of Education for
what to do.

3. Read the files (F1;F2) about multi grade teaching.

4. Form your own opinion on what to do based on the advice
obtained.

5. Make a memorandum for your future use and send it to
your teacher for comments.
