Wording:
The task is to understand and practice one of fundamental principles of Another Kind of School “the Common Meeting governs the School”, where the students and teachers together are in charge of DNS; they decide, listen, speak up, find solutions, own, give direction, develop, try something new and more.
Time:
hours
Introduction:
The school is like a small community that needs some form of organisation or
‘constitution’ which will give guidance on who decides what and who is responsible for
what. At DNS, the foundation of organisation can be expressed in one vision: “At our
School, the Headmaster leads the School, the Common Meeting governs the School,
and all of us in our different positions act together to run the School.”

It’s the main rule of DNS, which emphasises the common ownership of the school:
students, teachers, and other employees come together to organise it. It’s our school,
and it’s ours together, therefore the ruling is based ideally on the consensus or
eventually compromise. It’s not the majority democracy or a vote of any kind but a lot
of listening and finding solutions.

The students and teachers together decide on how the school will be run and also the
students and teachers together implement these decisions in practice. There is no
division on those who rule and those who follow the orders because running and
governing the school is a common project. This connection is to ensure the common
ownership of the school. So, if you think something doesn’t work, the way it should:
give a proposal and make it happen. In this system it’s you who are responsible for the
school!

Not all the matters should be taken up in the Common Meeting, but naturally the one
who involve everybody. Decisions regarding a team can be discussed during the Team
Common Meeting; the Core Group will also meet and decide what concerns it. Overall,
the one who are close to the issue, decide upon solving it. What’s common is that all
the meetings are based on consensus, listening and finding solutions.

And then we have a Headmaster, or two or more, who give(s) leadership wherever a
fast decision needs to be taken, a vision to be drawn, issues to be clarify. He, she or
they also represent the school outwards.
Directive:
1. Read from the 3-Year OWU Licentiate of Pedagogy Program (F1; F2).

2. “At our School, the Headmaster leads the School, the Common Meeting governs the
School, and all of us in our different positions act together to run the School.” How do
you understand this vision? Discuss the implications. What does it mean for you as a
student at DNS? What does it mean for you becoming a teacher?

3. Participate in the DNS Common Meetings and Tvind Common Meetings for 6-7
weeks. At least once, be part of preparing the meeting in a small group of students and
teachers.

4. Write a 2-page summary, in which you reflect upon the Common Meetings. You can
decide in your Core Group to make specific questions to be answered in the summary.
As examples, you can use the following ones:

-How did you prepare the Common Meetings?

-What subjects did you decide to put under discussion? How did you decide the
priorities?

-Have you taken any decisions? What challenges have you met to reach the consensus?

-How was the follow up after the Common Meetings? To what degree did the decisions
materialise? What do you think were the reasons?

-How would you evaluate the Common Meetings overall? Discuss, if they served as a
good tool for solving problems and making plans.

-Discuss what you have learned from the Common Meetings: individually and as a
group.

-What could be improved in the future Common Meetings?

5. Send the answer to point 2 and the summary to your teacher. You can also attach
some chosen products, plans or agendas from these meetings.
