Introduction:
Modern technology and communication.
Hmm …

Modern technology is much more than just communication –it is also information.
Thinking of the Internet and computers – and mobile phones and iPads and GPS. They all
represent various forms of communicating information.

During the “Arab Spring” mobile phones and information communication technology
played an important role. For many people this was seen as a good thing. But information
and communication technology are alos used by criminals and terrorists. But don't worry.
The government can hear them. But … when they can hear terrorist and criminals and
listen to what they are talking about, they can also listen to us. This means that everything
we say when using the phone can go directly to the government, the police or the military.
Yes it probably does. It’s worrying, isn’t it?

Add to this the recently developed Google glass, you get a new and presumably more
efficient form of communication compared to “old fashion” smart phones. With a Google
glass you get access to instant information about the person you meet on the street, they
way you want to go or the job you are about to perform, for example when a doctor is
performing an operation.

But this is not the only new thing in the electronic world. You may have seen Tom Cruise
in the film “Minority Report” where he manipulated the computer just by moving his
hands. When the film came out in 2002 this way of controlling a computer was pure
Science Fiction. Now a similar way of handling a computer is available both for the Mac
and the PC. It looks really impressive when you see the demo films on YouTube.
Imagine that you have a new iPhone, and you don't want anybody else to use it and access
your private data. Apple has developed a fingerprint scanner for the telephone. You press
your thumb on the phone. The phone reads your fingerprint, confirms it is actually yours,
and it is ready for use. If the fingerprint is not yours, it does not work.

It is impossible to mention all these new electronic gadgets without mentioning virtual
reality. Virtual reality has been around for some time, but the headsets have been clumsy
and the computers have been slow. Now it seems that virtual reality has grown up, and that
the new headsets are both lightweight and efficient. This can prove a great leap forward
both for games and for simulations.

Another thing that has been around for some time, but is now becoming affordable for the
general public is 3D printing. With a 3D printer, you can “print” virtually anything in 3
dimensions. This can prove a huge improvement in designing new things and showing how
things work.

There are so many new things going on with regards to the technological development that
it is virtually impossible to keep track of everything. Some of the things in existence we are
using and know how to use, other things might be used in new and unexpected ways and
change the way we live and work in the future.

Go to the Instruction to see what you have to do to learn more about new technology and
its applications in relation to human communication and information.
Directive:
Read the introduction and the questions and make sure you understand the overall aim of
the task.

Read ALL the files.
How to use this task:

Variant 1.
You can solve the task individually by answering all the questions in the form of a 3-page
text.

Variant 2.
You can solve the task commonly, where your teammates and you share different parts of
the topic among yourselves and present to each other in a form of a course. The whole
course with all the parts shouldn’t exceed 2 hours.
Each one of you will end up with a 1-page text about your part of the topic and the
conclusion from your part of the course. All the materials you used for your part of the
course should also be send to your teacher.

Use additional sources if you find it beneficial, especially if you have chosen the variant 2.
The origin of additional sources must be noted for control.

1. Read File 1 about the “Arab Spring”.
• What role did information and communication technology play during the days of
the “Arab Spring”?
• How did the authorities react?
• What was the outcome of this communication conflict?

2. Read File 2 about how technology makes us vulnerable.
• How do the criminal underground use information and communication technology?

3. Read File 3 about the US military and its ability to listen to the communications of ISIS.
• When American military is able to listen to ISIS, what about the rest of us, do you
think that the FBI or CIA or other secret services are listening to everything we do
over the Internet or say on the telephone? Give reasons for your answer.

4. Read File 4 about the Google glass.
• What is a Google glass doing?
• Does a Google glass represent something new compared to a smart phone?
• Do you think that in the Future we will all be wearing Google glasses or similar
devices? Give a reason for your answer.

5. Read File 5 about a doctor who was wearing Google glass during an operation.
• Do you think that wearing a Google glass during a difficult or interesting work
situation will be the future?
• How will wearing a Google glass affect the results when going for an exam?
• Try to imagine future uses of Google glass by e.g. taxi-drivers, washing machine
repairmen, sewer workers, the police force, professors or other professions.

6. Read File 6 about Leap Motion. Search for Leap Motion on YouTube and watch one or
more of the film clips you can seed there.
• Is this way of manipulating a computer similar to Tom Cruise’s in the film “Minority
Report” represent the future of computers or is it just another way of doing what we
have been doing for a long time? Give a reason for your answer.
• Does this way represent an improvement over a mouse and a keyboard or do you
think it represents a new dimension in computer technology. Give a reason for your
opinion.

7. Read File 7 about Apple’s new iPhone fingerprint scanner.
• Is this fingerprint scanner really an improvement, or is it just another “useless”
gadget?
• When your phone has stored your fingerprints, can this information be accessible
and used by the wrong people?

8. Read File 8 about virtual reality. Watch the film available on the Oculus homepage.
• Is Virtual Reality just an improvement for gamers, or can it have more serious uses?
• Will virtual reality be able to improve simulators so that pilots, captains and military
personnel can perform better?
• Can you imagine a taxi driver using virtual reality to train for more efficient city
driving?

9. Read file 9 about 3D printing.
• 3D printers are now small, cheap and available to the public. Will ordinary people
use 3D printers in the future, or will it be just for specialists?
• What is your opinion about 3D printing? Is it just a gadget, or will it turn out to
represent a new dimension in design and art?
• Do you think 3D printers in the future will replace traditional manufacturing? Give a
reason for your answer.
