Introduction:
Doing sports as physical exercise, as social interaction, and for sheer pleasure is an
important part of a good life. Being active is a natural state especially for children and
youngsters. They are big or small, strong or puny, fast or slow. Some are disabled, some
hyperactive and some have difficulties to be with other people. What is common is that
they can all benefit from being part of a sporting event.

They benefit first during the preparations, where the Tvind OL works as a mobilising
force, a goal and a reason for all the trainings. They benefit socially as many disciplines
require cooperation in the team. The event activates students and teachers to do more
sport, which results in betterment of physical and mental well-being and general health.

The youngsters who regularly do sports are proven to have improved concentration,
self-discipline and self-confidence. Doing sports together is also a lot of fun and a good
way to develop comradeship and friendships. The happiness is the greatest when
shared, why not to share it with 600-700 people?

From these and other reasons, the Tvind OL was started for the first time in 1981. Since
the beginning, it has been involving all the associates of the School Cooperation Tvind.
The idea was to create an annual event that would include everybody – small and big,
young and old. Throughout the years, different disciplines were developed: some
ordinary like volleyball, swimming or archery, and some completely crazy like
wheelbarrow race or water balloon volley. There are artistic disciplines like nature
sculpturing, and those who combine art with sport like Zumba. With puzzles, chess, kite
flying and circus, almost everyone can find something for him- or herself and join this
unique event.

Probably, the most particular characteristic of the Tvind OL is its special point system
that prioritises participation, which becomes often more important than winning. There
are still medals and trophies for the best results of individuals and teams, but for the
classification of the schools, it’s the participation that is emphasised. Thanks to that,
each single student matters and collects the points for his or her school.

Since 2001, the Tvind OL is an event where the majority of children and youth have
special needs of some kind. There can be all kind of reasons for the special needs: a
difficult family situation, learning problems, or coming from marginalized groups of the
society, bad previous experiences or a physical or mental handicap. Many of them had
never before participated in any sporting activities. Others love only one specific
discipline and are not confident to try anything new, usually because they are afraid of
a failure. Most of them come from an environment that has not been able to support
them with the love, confidence and trust that is fundamental to a child’s social
development.

Creating the programmes, which are suitable for this diverse group of students, and
inclusion of all the individuals with various talents and challenges are very important
principals of the Tvind Pedagogy. The organisers of the event are not merely preparing
the event and being referees, they are also acting as pedagogues and teachers.
Constant pedagogical considerations are a big part of the task and necessary to make
the OL a good learning time for everybody.

Overall, it’s a unique occasion for all: teachers and students, organisers and participants
to experience a common success and feeling of unity. Because “We are all winners!”
Remarks:

‘OL’ stands for Danish Olympiske Lege, which means Olympic Games. ‘Olympic Games’
is a name reserved for International Olympic Committee (IOC) and therefore cannot be
used without IOC’s consent.

‘We are all winners!’ is a pedagogical slogan of the Tvind OL.
Directive:
Welcome to the OL-camp! You are a teacher in charge of preparing and conducting a
sport programme for 600-700 people.

1. Receive a course in Pedagogy of OWU and DNS about the Tvind Pedagogy and the
Small Schools. It’s a precondition for solving this study task.

2. Read the attached files discussing the balance between cooperation and
competition (F1-F5). If you are interested, you can scheme through other resources
(F8a#, F8b#).

3. Join the Common Meeting in the OL-Camp. Read the list of tasks for the event (F6)
and distribute them among you, making responsibility groups. All responsibilities have
to be taken appropriate care of. This is a common responsibility. Decide the structure of
meetings and communication.

4. Create and distribute a booklet to all the organisers with all the responsibilities and
information, which might be useful. Notice that many of you don’t know the place.

5. Meet in your responsibility group and read the instruction adequate to your
responsibility (F6a-F6v). Plan your time how you will reach your goals and start on the
tasks. Communicate with the OL-Committee, other groups and follow the structure.

6. Receive a course in The Pedagogy of OWU and DNS about the point system and
politics behind it.

7. Finish all your tasks that have to be accomplished before the event and pass the
exam with the OL-Committee proving that you are in control of your responsibilities.

8. Get in control of the point system using the cheat sheet (F7). Pass the exam in the
point office.

9. Check with the human resources that you know exactly when and where you
should be during the event. If you are ahead of time with your preparations, remember
to support other groups. If you are behind, seek for help.

10. In between, follow the instructions of the opening ceremony group and participate
in the rehearsals if needed.

11. The Tvind OL finally starts! Follow your duties and remember that even with the
best preparations many unpredicted problems might occur. Act accordingly, stick
together with your comrades and, enjoy the event.

12. Clean after the event.

13. Make a common meeting within Lifestyle Sustainability where you conclude on the
Tvind OL (LSS 1-11M).

14. Write a three-page essay where you discuss the balance between cooperation and
competition in creating sporting programmes. Use the examples from the Tvind OL. You
can also include some of the following questions:

-What was the main goal/reason of the event? For the youngsters? For the teachers?
Relate the answer to the slogan of the OL: “We are all winners!”.

-What pedagogical principals have you considered while preparing the event?

-What is the politics behind the point system in the Tvind OL? How does it matter for
each individual student? Do you agree with the current system? What could be the
alternative?

-What challenges have you met working with participants: both students and
pedagogues? How have you overcome them? Describe concrete situations.

-What would you do differently next time?

-How would you improve the instructions and general organization of the event next
year?

-What disciplines would you add/modify/remove to make the event more accessible for
the participants?

-How will you finally conclude upon the event?

15. Send the booklet and the summary to your teacher. Add some picture of you in
action, and products of your group, for example: a spreadsheet or a graph presenting
an organization of the discipline, a picture of the sign showing the way to the discipline,
final points of the event, a map with directions to the bowling competition, human
resources timeline etc.

Notice:
It might be necessary for some of the tasks to be carried on before the event. They are
usually prepared by the OL-Committee formed of few teachers and students.
