Introduction:
The profession that lies ahead of you requires a great deal of reflection, enabling you to
get to know the children that you will work with much better. Knowing how to teach is
not enough to become a teacher. A teacher must get to know each child as he or she
develops. Teachers have to learn to recognise the characteristics that are important to
helping each child learn effectively.

To work with children it is essential that you understand children’s stages of growth
and development.

It is helpful to learn the characteristics of children at different ages; their interests,
likes, fears, needs. This knowledge is important when it is included among the theories
found in books, observation and experience. In this way, the characteristics of each
pupil may be discovered.

The learning process includes many different ways of learning. Some pupils prefer to
work alone; others like group activities, and some like to read books or texts that
include specific exercises for practising learning.

We do know that education is a process that hopes to maintain and transform society.
Recently, education has bet on child-centred learning, which is characterised by
making pupils the owners of their own learning, according to previously acquired
experience. Child-centred education involves creating an environment that is
conducive to learning, which engages the pupils and enables them to actively learn.

With this method, the teacher stops being the “bearer of all knowledge” and becomes a
“facilitator of the learning process”.

For this type of work to become a reality, you will develop your professional skills,
reflecting on your teaching practice inside the classroom, and your concept of teaching,
which is responsible for the pupils’ learning. We invite you to obtain further
knowledge about the following aspects:

- Acquire knowledge vital to child-centred learning;

- Respect the child as a creative being;

- Develop a range of methods and teaching strategies that will improve the
learning of your pupils.

Directive:
1. Read the file (F1) “Student Centered Learning”.

2. Choose from the student’s textbook in the class and subject
you teach, five examples where you find it an advantage for
the pupils to study and work on their own.

3. Lead a discussion in your micro group with the aim of
qualifying your findings.

4. Make a detailed lesson-plan for one of the examples – ready
to be used in your class.

5. Write an essay defending your point of view, enclose the
lesson plan and send it to your teacher for comments.
