Introduction:
Food and nutrition security remain Africa’s most fundamental challenges for human
welfare and economic growth. Far too many people on the continent are unable to
acquire and effectively utilize at all times the food they need for a healthy life.

Because of low food availability and profound poverty, an estimated 200 million
people on the continent are undernourished, and their numbers have increased by
almost 20 percent since the early 1990s. The result is that more than a third of
African children are stunted in their growth and must face a range of physical and
cognitive challenges not faced by their better-fed peers. Under-nutrition is the major
risk factor underlying over 28 percent of all deaths in Africa (some 2.9 million
deaths annually). The continuing human costs of inadequate food and nutrition are
enormous, and the aggregate costs of food and nutrition insecurity at the national
level impose a heavy burden on efforts to foster sustained economic growth and
improved general welfare.

For you as a Development Instructor, it is essential that you can recognize the signs
of under-nutrition. There are many simple ways to counter these conditions and you
can be part of improving the situation for the people in the community where you
work.

Malnutrition has been part and parcel of the lives for the Poor throughout history and
millions of people have died from hunger and diseases because of that. In spite of an
enormous increase in global food production with enough food to feed the entire
world population today, hunger and malnutrition is still a curse in the lives of
millions of people.

Since the end of the Second World War, food security has been defined as a human
right for the first time in history. Still there is a long way to go before we achieve
this. There are many projects and efforts working in this field, but the solutions are
not radical enough and there tend to be an attitude of neglect from world media – an
acceptance of the situation; “it has always been like this”.

But a life is a life – regardless where in the world you are born, and
undernourishment is an unworthy condition to accept in the 21 st Century.
Directive:
1. The teacher gives a presentation based on Chapter 11 from David Werner’s
book “Where there is no Doctor” and Todd Benson’s report “Africa’s Food
and Nutrition Security Situation”.

2. The class discuss ways to counter the condition of undernourishment using the
tips from Chapter 11 from David Werner’s book “Where there is no Doctor”
and Christian Fenger’s “40 Green World Actions”, Chapter 4: “Sufficient and
Nutritious Food”.
