Introduction:
Diseases like obesity, diabetes, cancer, high blood pressure and cardiovascular
diseases are called life style diseases, because they come from the life style of modern
humans. They are the major killers in the developed world.

The human body is not meant to live like the majority of people do in the developed
world – sitting down and sleeping – meaning being physically inactive – for up to 20
hours a day, eating processed and GMO food and being stressed. This lifestyle takes
its toll on our bodies and over the years this can lead to deadly diseases.
It takes firm decisions to avoid these life style diseases.

In this task we will take a look at the 4 major life style diseases: Obesity, diabetes,
high blood pressure and cardiovascular diseases to understand what they are and why
they are so prevailing in the developed world. In other tasks we will focus on all the
things we can do to avoid getting them.

Globally, there are more than 1 billion overweight adults, at least 300 million
of them obese. Obesity and overweight pose a major risk for diseases such as type 2
diabetes, heart diseases and certain forms of cancer.

The key causes are increased consumption of food with too much unhealthy
fat and sugars, and reduced physical activity. Not only rich countries have large part
of the population as obese. Mexico and South Africa have more than 20%
obese people.

More than 180 million people worldwide have diabetes.

This number is likely to more than double by 2030. Just India is predicted to
have 80 million people with diabetes by then. Over 1 million people die annually from
diabetes. The increase in deaths and people with diabetes is related to food
habits and lifestyle. An example of such unhealthy eating habit: 20% of US
fast food meals are taken in cars!

High blood pressure is a common condition in which the long-term force of the blood
against your artery walls is high enough that it may eventually cause health problems,
such as heart disease.

Cardiovascular disease is a general term that describes a disease of the heart or blood
vessels. Blood flow to the heart, brain or body can be reduced as the result of a blood
clot (thrombosis), or by a build-up of fatty deposits inside an artery that cause the
artery to harden and narrow – this can lead to heart attacks and stroke.

Read the two files: “How to lower the blood pressure” and “Cardiovascular
fitness”, own production, 2012.

4. Consider the 4 life style diseases and explain why these are so common in our
developed world – what are the main cause of this?

5. Send the explanation to your teacher.
