The task is to identify elements to take into consideration when planning for climate compliance at your school.
Time:

Introduction:
Global warming and climate change is happening and it is affecting all of us, in
different ways and with different severity.

We live in the mid-west of the US and in order to identify elements that we have to
take into consideration when planning for climate compliance, we need to study what
climate changes we can expect in the future.

There are actually several reports with predictions for the Midwest and they have the
same basic outlook. We will use the reports prepared by The Union of Concerned
Scientists.

The Midwest is going to suffer a lot form climate change and this is threatening the
livelihood of the millions of people who are farmers and thereby also the people in
the US and abroad who are depending on the food. The Midwest as such has to
seriously take action against pollution and cutting CO2 emission into the atmosphere.

When planning how we as a school become climate compliance one thing is what
WE do at the school, but we also have to take action together with people in our area
for major changes to happen at state level – and even national and global level.

We can develop the plan for our school to become climate compliance by identifying
actions within a four essential areas: Sustainable Energy, Food Security, Water and
Waste, and Preparedness for Emergencies.

As we move along we can share and exchange experiences with people in our region
who are also occupied with climate change.
Directive:
1. Read the file: “Climate Change in Michigan” by Union of Concerned
Scientists, www.ucsusa.org

2. You can choose to use the more technical background reports as well: “Climate
change in the Midwest” and “Midwest – climate backgrounder”.

3. Use the file: “Thoughts for inspiration” by Jytte Martinussen – as inspiration.

4. Conclude: What are the future projections for the climate in the Midwest?

5. How will these projections affect life as we know it?

6. Use the 4 essential areas to identify which elements we have to include in our
plans to become climate compliant?

7. Make a list of actions – use the DMM format with a title and a wording – and
make a timeline for when to implement them. Make a preliminary budget for
each action - determine which ones can be done with none, a small or a big
investment.

8. Present the actions, the timeline and the preliminary budget to the Common
Meeting. Be sure to have plenty of time for the discussion.

9. At the Common Meeting you decide how to move forward on this issue.
