The task is to understand the importance of using all your 620 muscles every day.

Introduction:
The human body has a unique capacity of healing itself.

Quite a lot of healing takes place without us even noticing it – much of this during
sleeping.

Have you ever been operated at the hospital? Even after the most complicated and
serious surgeries, doctors will push you out of bed the day after the operation. This is
not to be unfriendly (or for economic reasons), but because they know, that if you do
not move your body, you will start losing some of your muscle mass.

Or have you ever broken a leg? Then you would have noticed that when the plaster
comes off, the leg is thin and weak and you have to retrain the muscles.

Our body has 620 muscles and they are all meant to be used. However, with the
lifestyle we have, our bodies are inactive up to 20 hours a day – either we sit or sleep
– for the body it makes no difference, it is all detected as inactivity. Inactivity is a
curse of modern life style – researchers are calling it “the new smoking”.

The healing power of the body can help us through the young years, but as we grow
older (from 20 years and onward) the muscles starts to weaken if they are not used.

And after the age of 40 we start losing our muscle mass never to be regained again
and how fast this is progressing depends on us – muscles that are not used will simply
die. So it is essential for us to move ALL of them every day, to let our bodies know
that we still need them.

Regardless how old you are; it is time to consider your muscles and create new habits
– e.g. get a standing desk and exercise your muscles every day so they will last long
into old age and keep you vital.
Directive:
1. Read the article by Miranda Esmonde-White: “Why do I Suddenly Feel So
Old?” from her book “Aging Backward”, 2014.

2. What consequences will you take after reading the article? Don’t take decisions
you cannot or do not intend to keep! But make sure that those you take, you
also follow them!

3. Start an exercise club at the school using Miranda’s fitness programs – it is 10
different 30-minute programs that you can do every day – anyone can do them
– it is about using all your 620 muscles. You school has the programs on DVD.
