The task is to learn about the Farmers’ Clubs concept with its program, organizations and results
Time:
hours
Introduction:
Farmers’ Clubs projects belong to the Sustainable Agriculture and Environment Thematic Area of Humana People to People. They are projects working with food security and sustainable agriculture together with subsistence farmers most often organized in Farmers’ Clubs.

The idea of the Farmers’ Clubs is to reduce the effects of rural poverty, increase food security and train the farmers in sustainable livelihoods and ecosystems. An important way for small scale farmers to get out of poverty is to get into wealth creation and accumulation from farming, and this should be done in environmental sustainable ways. This demands new thinking and better organization of the farmers.
“Get farmers in an area to join their forces, ideas and resources and thereby further the agricultural production of each member. In so doing improve the standard of living and the well-being of each family.”

Farmers’ Clubs raise the demands placed on the farmers who are members, which pushes development forward. The farmers receive training in new farming methods to increase the yield, and they often also receive an input of better quality seeds or animals to improve the production significantly. Often small inputs, better methods and joint efforts of the farmers can yield remarkable results – improvements from 30% up to several hundred percent depending on the crop.
In many projects the farmers form Savings and Lending Groups of 5 to 15 persons where each farmer contributes a small amount monthly and from that the farmers can on turn borrow money to invest in their farming or animal husbandry and pay back with a small interest. Many times these groups are run by women or a majority of women who tend to be better at savings. In some projects these groups or the Farmer’s Clubs turn into legally established Farmer’s Cooperatives.

The farmers are organized in their village in clubs of 50, although many projects today have changed this to 25, as this is more efficient and beneficial. The clubs select a Farmers’ Clubs Committee of 5 members, which is responsible for the running of the Club. These farmers are called “Step-Up Farmers” as they will be the best among equals and receive more training to be able to spread this to the other farmers. The farmers in the club is further organized in smaller groups, Core Groups, with 10 farmers in each, or 5 in the clubs of 25, who support each other in the daily work and has a Step-Up Farmer from the Committee to support them.
Five clubs form a project with a total of 250 (or 125) farmers with a fulltime Farming Instructor / Project Leader attached.
Each club establishes a model field where the farmers work together some hours every week together, under the guidance of the Farming Instructor, in trying out new and better methods, which they will then use in their own fields when they see the benefit.

The 6 Results to be reached in Farmers’ Clubs are:
Result 1: We, the farmers, increase our wealth
Result 2: We, the farmers, provide our families with enough & nutritious food
Result 3: We, the farmers, take good care of and improve our land
Result 4: We, the farmers, improve the well-being and health of our families
Result 5: We, the farmers, use rainwater efficiently and take action to get water for irrigation.
Result 6: We, the farmers, are organized with our fellow farmers

The project is ideally a 5-year Programme, though the length depend on funding possibilities and many are 3 years programs. HPP believes that it will take 5 years before the results of the programme will take off, particularly considering that 2 years out the 5 years will most probably not be consistent due to rainfall patterns.

The road to reach the results is full of challenges. Most farmers depend on growing seasonal crops in a dry land farming system and the output is very much dependent on sufficient rain. The farmer needs to adjust to changing rainfall patterns due to Climate Change and needs new knowledge in order to make this change. The farmer has only little knowledge about modern sustainable farming methods. The farmers use a traditional way to farm.
Directive:
