Introduction:
Education is one of the pillars of society and the spreading of knowledge is key to understanding. However, teaching is one thing, and learning is quite another.
Motivation is a precondition for learning. Students gain motivation when the program is relevant to them, when they are firmly in charge of their own training, and as a product of their meeting with the world at large.

The POF program - Preschools of the Future, supports children in developing their cognitive, emotional, social and motor skills and prepares them to start primary school.
The program provides children with access to preschool education at reduced cost in areas where most children cannot go to preschool. It mobilizes local government, parents and local community resources to operate preschools with class sizes of 15-30 children for children aged 3 to 6. The program is sustainable because the community participates and actively supports it, and parents contribute to the expenses. Most HPP countries run POF schools in their Community Development projects or as separate projects.

The Kadam Step-Up Program of Humana People to People India works in close cooperation with the state governments of India to achieve the goal of universal primary education by bridging the education gap for out-of-school children. The program establishes Kadam Centers that make basic education accessible to underprivileged children in accelerated programs, meaning that the children study 2 grades during one year until they are ready to join age appropriate primary school classes. Kadam is the Hindi word for step-up.
Under the Program the Kadam Teachers engage with the children’s parents to ensure full support for the children.
The Academy for Working Children of Humana People to People India function in similar ways, and have focus on children from slum areas that are forced to work to help sustain their families.

The programs at the Children’s Towns and in Primary Schools are addressing marginalized children and youth aiming at giving them a solid foundation for their future, learning academic, practical and life skills. HPP members in Zambia and Mozambique operate Children’s Towns, with boarding facilities for orphans and homeless children and DAPP Zimbabwe runs a similar program Ponesai Vanhu Junior School. DAPP Mozambique also operates some ordinary primary schools.
The Polytechnic Schools of ADPP Angola, also called PTG, offer a new type of education for secondary school students. The Polytechnic Schools educate the whole person in a bid to ensure that the students graduate school as knowledgeable, dynamic young people, who are capable of contributing to the national development. The schools teach 7th, 8th and 9th grades. The schools combine lower secondary school education with professional training in a range of professions. The students learn academic subjects that follow the national curriculum, as well as other subjects related to the world of today, all of which is key in shaping them to become active citizens. The students can seek technical qualifications in one of the 9 professions on offer: Water Assistant, Energy Assistant, Food Producer, Environment Promoter, Modern Cook, Community Health Agent, Information and Media Assistant, Pre-School Assistant, Textile Artisan.

The Vocational Schools provide skills training for youth in modern trades in a combination of theoretical and practical elements, providing a fruitful exchange between studies in the classroom and exercises in the workshop. Vocational Schools are being operated in Namibia, Mozambique, Malawi, Zimbabwe and Guinea Bissau.
